RISK EVERYTHING By George F. Walker May 14-25, 2019

Cement Factory and NightShift Theatre have assembled a dynamite ensemble to bring Risk Everything to the Red Sandcastle Theatre this spring. Written by acclaimed Toronto playwright George F. Walker and directed by award-winning performer and designer Allan Michael Brunet, this dark comedy about family ties and personal values comes to Leslieville for a limited run, from May 14 to 25.

Risk Everything is the last instalment in George F. Walker’s Suburban Motel series, which explores the darker side of our capitalist society from the underdog’s perspective. This fast-paced comedy follows Denise as she tries to free herself from a troubled past and become a respectable member of society. When her grifter mother shows up with a dangerous scheme and starts recruiting her T.V. addicted ex-con husband as an accomplice, it will take all of Denise’s resources and determination to keep from lapsing into her old ways. Throw an angry mob boss and a porn director neighbour into the mix and the family may have to risk everything to avoid losing it all.

“Walker’s characters are imperfect and unpredictable, all slightly broken but with an irrepressible spirit that makes them a pure joy to get to know”, says Allan Michael Brunet about working on this script.

For this production, Allan Michael Brunet will transform the Red Sandcastle Theatre into a seedy east end motel room. “I found a house that was about to be torn down. It looked like it had been decorated in the ‘70s. I stripped it of its fake wood panelling and floor to ceiling drapes. Perfect decors for a cheap ‘90s motel room.” Building a set from recycled materials found on Kijiji also makes sense for an environmentally conscious company with a limited budget.

As a special bonus, Cement Factory is reviving the tradition of presenting a short story before the feature event by inviting some of its friends to perform a 10-minute play before each show. Visit CementFactoryTheatre.ca for complete line-up.

“The tightly structured play unspools with perfect precision, moving, as the best farce does, from a premise with at least some pretense of naturalism toward an explosion of lunacy.”

About George F. Walker (georgefwalker.ca)

George F. Walker is one of Canada’s most prolific and popular playwrights. Since beginning his theatre career in the early 1970s, Walker has written more than 30 plays and has created screenplays for several award-winning Canadian television series.

The Suburban Motel series is one of his standout pieces of work. These plays deal with the plight of the underclass, and the desperate and often ridiculous measures they resort to in their efforts to improve their lot. Part Kafka, part Lewis Carroll, Walker’s distinctive, gritty, fast-paced tragicomedies illuminate and satirize the selfishness, greed, and aggression of contemporary urban culture.

About Allan Michael Brunet and Cement Factory (cementfactorytheatre.ca)

Allan Michael Brunet is an award winning theatre creator with over 30 years’ experience. Graduating with honours from the University of Ottawa in acting and directing, Allan Michael became the premier lighting designer in the region’s French theatre scene and worked with some of Canada’s top directors. After leaving Ottawa, Allan Michael became the lead puppeteer with Théâtre de la Dame de Coeur, translated several plays from French to English, toured the world as designer and puppeteer, and spent 3 years in New York, performing with Cirque du Soleil. Now based in Toronto, Allan Michael continues to design, perform and create theatre. He has been nominated five times for awards in design, winning twice, and three times for acting, winning once.

Cement Factory is Allan Michael Brunet’s latest venture: a company with which he can draw on his varied interests and extensive experience to create theatre that is entertaining, vibrant and, well, concrete. Risk Everything is Cement Factory’s inaugural production.
